At least 1,200 people live in the community of Las Cañas. Two years ago, its well collapsed, and since then each family survives on two barrels (about 500 liters of water) per week.

Although in San Miguel de Allende the tourism sector was the hardest hit in 2020, it appears that this industry will grow in 2021, as hotel chains such as Marriot, Pueblo Bonito, Hyatt, and Hilton will come to town. Concurrently, companies in San Miguel’s industrial zone should also expand, and that labor pool, currently 6,500, should increase.

Busts, as well as standing and seated equestrian sculptures in the city pay permanent homage to Ignacio Jesús Pedro Regalado de Allende y Unzaga, the hero whose surname it adopted, and who led up to 40,000 men during the armed independence uprising of 1810.

Atención had a conversation with San Miguel’s municipal president, Mayor Luis Alberto Villarreal. He shared a message for the community, which he says has supported the municipality rising up in the face of this year’s complex conditions. Villarreal also told us about projects lined up for 2021, including his intention to seek a second consecutive term as mayor.

On New Year’s Eve, the grapes, champagne, and kisses will have to be enjoyed at home—but with a lot of music, starting at 10pm.
