Online Literary Events Close Writers’ Conference Season

During the second week in March the Writers’ Conference will present their final week of online programs. In the 16 year tradition of the Writers’ Conference, the Literary Season Online will conclude with four more world-class writers, workshops for writers, and special literary events.

 

Simon Winchester

Simon Winchester rose to fame with his book, The Professor and the Madman, about the astonishing origins of the Oxford English Dictionary. The success of that book unleashed passions in Winchester to write eleven other remarkable stories including his most recent: “Land: How the Hunger for Ownership Shaped the Modern World. Jorge Hernández and Margo Glantz

Jorge Hernández, the much beloved literary figure in Mexico, was active in the early days of the San Miguel Writers’ Conference and we are thrilled to welcome him back. He is the author of more than a dozen books and the recipient of several of Mexico’s prestigious literary prizes. 

Novelist and journalist Margo Glantz has won numerous literary prizes and has held influential literary positions in several countries. She was the Cultural Attaché at the Embassy of Mexico in London and has been a visiting professor at universities including Harvard, Berkeley, Princeton, and Yale among others.

This event is a rare opportunity to become acquainted with two of Mexico’s most celebrated writers on the topic, “The Mexican Tradition in Literature.” Sat, Mar 13, 6pm.

 

Emma Donoghue

Prolific Canadian writer Emma Donoghue may be best known for her runaway bestseller, Room, which was shortlisted for both the Man Booker and the Orange Prizes. It has sold over two million copies and was made into a popular movie. Her most recent historical novel, The Pull of the Stars, takes place during great flu pandemic of 1918 and became an instant New York Times bestseller. Sun, Mar 14, 6pm.

 

The Honorable Graeme Clark

The San Miguel Writers’ Conference is an historic literary collaboration between Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. In recognition of the value and significance of this relationship Canada’s ambassador to Mexico, the Honorable Graeme Clark, will greet us personally at the beginning of Emma Donoghue’s presentation. Book Club Boot Camp

Is your book group using your gatherings in the most productive way? Might you be overlooking techniques that would add substance to your discussions? Susan Page will present some ideas for better book group meetings, followed by a live Q and A when you can share your own ideas. Sun, Mar 7, 2pm.

 

A Literary Season Soirée: Faculty Showcase

In a rousing finale to our stellar Literary Season, we will feature some of the Literary Season’s popular writers and celebrate the success of this virtual season! The party will be hosted by Judyth Hill. Satu, Mar 13, 2pm.

 

Workshops for Writers

Our March workshops for writers include these topics: Playwriting and screenwriting, fiction, personal essay, and marketing your life story.
