One of the excellent sites for learning online is Coursera.org. This learning platform was founded in 2012 by two Stanford University professors and currently offers courses through partnerships with over 200 colleges and universities around the world. Many of the courses are free and others require a fee but offer certification that can be used toward a degree.
As an example, I looked at The Science of Well-Being. The course, offered by Yale University, offers an opportunity to engage in challenges designed to increase your happiness and create productive habits. Professor Lorie Santos reveals misconceptions about happiness, annoying features of the mind that lead us to think the way we do, and the research that can help us change. All these elements can prepare you to successfully incorporate wellness activities into your life.
The second course I looked at is titled Introduction to Psychology, and is offered by either Yale University or the University of Toronto. The Yale course is taught by Professor Robert Bloom and its overview covers many questions people ask themselves. What are people most afraid of? What do our dreams mean? Are we natural-born racists? What makes us happy? What are the causes and cures of mental illness? The course tries to answer these questions and many others, and gives an overview of the scientific study of thought and behavior. It explores topics such as perception, communication, learning, memory, decision-making, persuasion, emotions, and social behavior.
Another interesting course was Successful Negotiations, this one offered by the University of Michigan. This one is taught by Professor George Siedel and provides an insight into what we normally do on a daily basis—negotiate. On a personal level, we negotiate with friends, family, landlords, car sellers and employers, among others. Negotiation is also the key to business success. No business can survive without profitable contracts. Within a company, negotiation skills can lead to your career advancement.
On this platform you will be joining thousands of other students who have undertaken the learning of successful negotiations. This is one of the most successful and best-qualified courses with MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses). The course covers four essential elements of successful negotiation: Preparation—planning your negotiation strategy. Negotiation—key tactics for success. Closing—create and contract. The End Game—perform and evaluate.
