“Frans Bloem: Kabarett Beyond Borders”

By John Wharton

Harold Pinter, the only playwright to have won a Nobel Prize for Literature, is known for deeply thoughtful, provocative, and enigmatic plays which explore big themes, especially the dynamics of power and patriarchy. In Ashes to Ashes, opening Wednesday, a couple is caught in a dissonant tango, their connections oblique.

The actors, Catherine Bryne and Steve Russell, revel in the demands of this “mysterious, sinister, hypnotic journey.” Bryne, known for her recent portrayal of Virginia Woolf in A Room of One’s Own (also at Shelter Theater), infuses a nuanced identification into the character of Rebecca.  Russell, well-regarded for his long acting career and musicianship, embodies her husband Devlin’s, longing and frustrations. You won’t want to miss this complex and superbly presented exploration of modern relationships, with a discussion after the performance. “Pinter provides a master lesson in how the personal and the political are ultimately indivisible”—The Guardian. Frans Bloem, award winning cabaret artist from Holland and New York, returns to San Miguel with his show “Kabarett Beyond Borders, this time accompanied by special guest Uriel Orozco Band. Singing in five languages from Paris to Shanghai, Frans is famed for his unrivaled interpretation of chansonnier Charles Aznavour, who personally authorized him to sing his classics. Cabaret Scene writes of Frans, “…a riveting show with a passion that binds the audience to him.” Please join us for an unforgettable evening of authentic European kabarett!
