Every year Pro-Musica ends the season with its famous Garden Concert where you will enjoy not only wonderful music but also unlimited Prosecco and thousands of delectable canapés during a 45-minute interval in a magical private garden in Guadiana.

This year we welcome the award-winning Axiom Brass Quintet, considered“one of the major art music groups in brass chamber music.” They are the only brass quintet in 27 years to win the prestigious Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition and the only American ensemble to win the Preis der Europa-Stadt Passau in Germany. In addition to performing Axiom was recognized for their inspired teaching and received the 2011 Fischoff Educator Award for their dedication. At this special concert, we will hear a wide range of music including Bach’s adaptation of Vivaldi’s Concerto in C minor arranged for brass quintet. This concerto is considered a jewel of Vivaldi’s mature style. Next up is Pieces for Brass Quintet by German composer Ludwig Maurer. A violinist and conductor as well as a virtuoso performer, Mauer toured Europe extensively in the 1820s. We will also hear Quintet for Brass by Danish composer Axel Jørgensen. This modern yet accessible work is punctuated with romantic melodies and beautiful harmonies. You will love Avian Capriccio by Augusta Read Thomas, commissioned by Axiom Brass in 2016: imagine the musicians as playful and virtuosic birds amidst a bebop-like fast tempo. In complete contrast we step back four centuries to the delightful Suite of Elizabethan Dances by late Renaissance composer Anthony Holborne. These beautiful and harmonious melodies will leave listeners feeling as if they are attending a Renaissance court.

To add Latin flavor, the program continues with Muerte del Angel by Ástor Piazzolla. From the dramatic opening it commands attention and it culminates in a wild ride of a finale!

We end the evening with contemporary composer, conductor, and bandmaster, Morley Calvert’s Suite: From the Monteregian Hills. Deftly incorporating material from folk music, Calvert’s work closes our Garden Concert with light and pleasing melodies.

We hope you will come and raise your glass to another fantastic concert season!
