Early morning on Feb 9, members of Amigos de la Presa kayaking and rowing club drove to Querétaro to participate in the 8th Annual Regata de la Amistad. The event, sponsored by Club Kayak de Querétaro, was held on Presa Santa Catarina. There were 85 competitors represented by eight national clubs including those from Veracruz, Lake Chapala, Manzanillo, Tulancingo, Jalpan, San Luis Potosí, and our local San Miguel club. There were two races, the 4K sprint and the longer 8K. Both had male and female contestants as well as age categories including youth, juniors, masters, seniors, and veterans groups. The race featured a large variety of kayak styles and sizes.
Amigos de la Presa entered six contestants, five in the seniors category and one in the masters division. Three of our club members raced in the 4K and three in the 8K. The results for Amigos de la Presa were nothing short of spectacular: six contestants and six medalists. Stella Nilsen, Amigos’ lone female participant, captured gold in the 4K. Also, in the 4K senior category, Graham Morgan received the gold while Michael Piccolo grabbed the bronze. In the longer 8K race, Geoff Nilsen and Mike Lambert were awarded the silver and bronze medals respectively in the seniors division. Diego Alvarez won the bronze medal in the masters 8K group. Ground support for the Amigos team was provided by Annette Smith, Paloma Cervantes, and Mike McGinnis. Thank you for your help. Amigos de la Presa kayaking and rowing club does not have a racing history. It has been a group that has offered recreational activities for the local community as well as for the many visitors in search of a sporting activity here in San Miguel. The decision to enter our first event proved a fruitful one. Due to the results and a good time had by all, we expect more participation in other national events in the coming years. A local race on Presa de Allende is also likely in the near future.
