Every year, the Midday Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende honors an outstanding local resident as our Citizen of the Year. The criteria for this award mirrors the fundamental tenet of Rotary Clubs around the world–service above self.

On February 25, we are excited to recognize Susan Page as our 2019 Citizen of the Year.

Perhaps no individual has started more successful NGOs helping the community of San Miguel than Susan Page. Recognized around the world for her six bestselling books on marriage and relationships, Susan and her husband, Mayer Shacter, came to San Miguel 18 years ago where she turned her attention from writing to organizing. Blessed with outstanding organizational skills, Susan set about making San Miguel a better place for everyone, especially women. A few years ago, Susan helped organize 100 Women Who Care, a quarterly meeting with a simple format to raise money for small NGOs and groups doing good for the community. The Women’s Brain Exchange is another event Susan Page organized: Once a month, women meet to network, brainstorm, and support each other.

Perhaps Susan’s biggest contribution to the community just wrapped up this past week.

The San Miguel Writers’ Conference had humble beginnings 15 years ago. Susan Page set it up to promote the love of reading and to support local writers. Now with a large staff and volunteers, it’s one of the premier Literary Conferences in the Americas. Attracting some 3,000 participants from Canada, the US, and many parts of Mexico, the conference has first-rate teaching professionals and internationally known tri-cultural authors. This year’s event included 13 main stage events with over 70 workshops and panels.

Please join us in celebrating with Susan on Tuesday, February 25 at a special Rotary meeting starting at 9:30am. We’re located at Los Arcos at 28 Stirling Dickinson. Rotary is where neighbors, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders and take action to create lasting change.
