Centro Infantil de los Ángeles, a free daycare and preschool for San Miguel de Allende children from low income families, recently received a generous grant from the Bernard Weisman Foundation established in memory of the late Bernie Weisman, a longtime resident of San Miguel and an active member of our community.
Late in his life Weisman established his Foundation, dedicated to social and economic justice by improving the lives of families and children in our community. In the years since Weisman’s passing, the Foundation, which is managed by Board Chair Julie Durand, has contributed generously to local NGOs that work to better the lives of Sanmiguelenses who suffer from lack of well paid employment, educational opportunities, or face serious medical issues.
The Foundation has long been a supporter of Centro Infantil. Their most recent donation came in January when the Foundation donated $5,000 to the Centro Infantil daycare (guardería) and preschool (kinder). Both services are free and aid some of the neediest families in San Miguel. Parents of children in Centro Infantil volunteer in both the daycare and the preschool to express their appreciation by helping to keep down the costs of running the center.
The daycare is a safe place where parents can leave their children so that they can work and support their families. The preschool prepares children to enter first grade. Between the daycare and the preschool, Centro Infantil provides care and education each day to over 160 children between the ages of six months and six years. Centro Infantil strongly stresses the importance of education, and of the 215 students who have graduated from preschool since 2009, all are still in school ‒ 143 in primary school, 58 in middle school, and 14 in high school.
Centro Infantil Director Patricia Palacios Cortes accepted the donation from Durand stating, “I am so grateful to Julie Durand and to the Bernard Weisman Foundation for this very generous donation. We try to be the best daycare and preschool for needy families in San Miguel, and with the help of friends like The Bernard Weisman Foundation we are able to achieve this goal.”
For her part, Durand commented, “The Weisman Foundation board has long been aware of the good work done by Centro Infantil. They make an incredible difference in the lives of many children and families, and it is our pleasure to help them continue their outstanding work. My only regret is that Bernie himself couldn’t be here to meet the lovely children and see first-hand how much his support means in the lives of many families.”
