Jóvenes Adelante Minicongress 1.0 Opens 2020 Application Period

By Don Krim

On January 18, 2020, more than 80 aspiring new applicants for the class of 2020 arrived bright and early for their first, in-person experience with Jóvenes Adelante (JA). Some came with their parents and spent 30 minutes at our coffee open house with a mix of current students, graduates, and mentors. After a 90-minute orientation to JA and its application process, around 40 enjoyed a tour of the Instituto Sanmiguelense, where some 20 percent of JA students attend (many supported by Amistad Canada).

Some 150 current students and graduates, mentors, sponsors, and interested newcomers attended a series of student workshops and a lecture and discussion entitled “Towards a Civic Alliance to Preserve the Cultural Heritage of San Miguel de Allende.” Moderator Mario Bravo facilitated presentations with JA students Jose Enrique Padron Velazco, Daniela Monzón, graduates Carla Cadena, Martina Garcia, and Francisco Peyret, Director of San Miguel’s local Environmental Department (Medio Ambiente). During the final wine-and-cheese hour, JA presented student achievement awards to several winners, and its annual Amistad Award to longtime supporter Joy Levine.

The minicongress officially launched JA’s 2020 application process for one month as JA looks to select another 25 superb students to enter or continue university. In addition, for the first time as a pilot project, JA will select five high school seniors and support them in the same comprehensive manner all students are supported. Each student has a financial sponsor and mentor. Sponsor and mentor recruitment is in high gear, so if you are interested please contact Don Krim (donkrim@jovenesadelante.org) regarding sponsorship and Nora Weaver (noraweaver@jovenesadelante.org) regarding mentoring.

Cannot afford a full sponsorship? Consider a half sponsorship. JA can find a partner for you!

Jóvenes Adelante unlocks a radically more expansive future for the youth of San Miguel de Allende by easing financial barriers to higher education and by developing life and leadership skills. For more information, please visit website jovenesadelante.org
